Helpful Video for Tapping into Your Fuse Box for Power
Hey everyone! Today I will show you how to tap into a fuse box safely. This is useful if you need to connect to ignition power for things like an amplifier, charger, or even a new radio. The fuse box is one of the easiest places to get this power, so let’s dive in.
We’re working on a G35 today, but the steps I’ll show you apply to most vehicles. First, you need to locate your fuse box. In this car, it’s next to the emergency brake pedal. Before you start, it’s a good idea to check out your fuse diagram to see where you should tap in. Look for circuits like the “power socket” or “cigarette lighter”—usually good options. Just be careful to avoid airbags or sensors—messing with those could prevent your car from starting if something goes wrong.
We’re going to check if a fuse is controlled by the ignition circuit, meaning it turns on and off with the car. To do that, you’ll need a voltmeter set to DC voltage. Attach the negative probe to a solid metal part of the car (like a bolt) for grounding, then use the positive probe to test the fuse. When we test the 15-amp fuse with the car off, it doesn’t show power, but once we turn the car on, the fuse is powered. This is exactly what we need—an ignition-controlled fuse with low importance that won’t affect anything critical.
Another tip is to look for any empty slots in the fuse box. Sometimes, these are still connected to the ignition circuit. It’s always worth testing them, as they can be a perfect, clean spot to use.
Next, we’re going to pull out the fuse using some needle-nose pliers. We need to determine which side is the “load” (12V power supply) and which is the “draw” (power going out to the circuit). The load side is where you’ll find 12 volts when the car is on. It’s important to get this right to avoid damaging the circuit or blowing the fuse incorrectly.
Now, let’s talk about different options for fuse taps. There are a few common types: standard ATC, ATM, and ATM LP, each designed for different fuse sizes. Sometimes, people take a shortcut by wrapping a wire around the fuse leg and jamming it back in. While this can work, it’s not the safest or cleanest way to do it. Instead, I recommend using proper fuse taps.
You can use these little sleeves that fit over the fuse and give you a secure connection point for a new wire. Just make sure you install the fuse tap with the load side in the correct position so that, if something goes wrong, the fuse blows as intended and protects your car’s wiring.
Another, more professional way to tap into a fuse box is to use a fuse tap pigtail. This setup has two slots: one for the original fuse and one for the new fuse you’re adding. Always make sure the new fuse is rated lower than the original one. This ensures proper protection for your new circuit. Again, make sure to get the load and draw sides right.
With our fuse tap ready, we’re putting the original 15-amp fuse back in and adding a new fuse for our circuit. Now it’s ready to go into the fuse box with the load side down, and we’re all set!
That’s it! You’ve now successfully tapped into a fuse box, and you’ve done it in a safe and clean way. What do you think, Fernando? “I think it’s nice.” He thinks it’s nice!
