Video Record Your Adventures (This could be you!)
Good morning, everyone! Welcome back to our California motorcycle adventure. We’re in Paso Robles, getting ready to hit the road. First stop? Coffee, of course. You may know that as of summer 2017, the road to Big Sur along the PCH is closed on both the north and south sides. Many people think it’s impossible to get there, but there is a way—and we’ll show you how to do it.
Let’s go. Step one: caffeine. A lot of folks assume Big Sur is completely cut off because of the landslides that took out the bridges in the north and the mudslides further south. While many parts are restricted to local traffic, there’s actually a route called the Ferguson Nacimiento Road, and that’s the way we’re planning to take today. It should lead us through a narrow canyon and drop us right out onto the coast. Hopefully, we’ll have it to ourselves—Big Sur is best experienced in solitude, which is a rare thing these days. Ready for another epic day of riding, bro? Let’s do it!
Paso Robles was great. Chill, though a bit busier than I’d like. Personally, I prefer the wine culture of Santa Ynez. San Luis Obispo has really stood out as one of the highlights of this trip. It’s got the same vibe as Paso but younger, thanks to the university there, and just more aligned with our style.
Look at these houses, man. Paso Robles developed quite a bit in the 1920s. Fun fact: a Polish pianist helped cultivate the wine scene here, which put the area on the national and international map—not to mention it’s always had its natural hot springs.
Today, we’re heading out of Paso Robles, making our way to Big Sur. Since the highway is closed, we’re taking a back route through the mountains, passing through an army base. We heard from other riders that it’s a great, remote ride, and I’m excited. Sometimes what feels like a roadblock is really an invitation to explore a new path—hopefully discovering something even better along the way. Confucius said, “Open roads are meant for journeys, not destinations.” Let’s go on a journey.
We just pulled over at a lone little store in Lockwood. It’s over 90 degrees out, and it seems all the riders have stopped to take a break in the shade. I’m trying to figure out where the next gas station is—I’m pretty sure the closest one is Big Sur. We’ve got some spare fuel reserves, so we’ll be fine. This section of the ride is really cool because it feels like I’ve discovered a hidden part of California. We’re inland from the coast now, and it’s hot and dry, with oaks and ranches all around. Just a different vibe, you know?
On the other side lies Big Sur and the Pacific Coast Highway. It’s awesome. Just saw a sign: “Jesus is alive.” Oh, and a biker just set off someone’s car alarm! Anyway, we need to fill up on water; there won’t be any stops until Big Sur, and it’s scorching out. Get it while you can.
